Tips   View and manage commodity code maps

A commodity code map translates between different commodity code domains. Each map entry maps a commodity code in one domain to a commodity code in another domain. A commodity code map can include mappings between more than two domains. Mappings do not have to be one-to-one. Commodity code maps are nonpartitioned and contain nonpartitioned data.

In general, you first bulk load commodity code domain mappings from one or more .csv files using integration events that are configured to pull data from these files. In the default configuration, data is loaded into a single commodity code map located in partition/None.

In general, you create commodity code maps from public standard (external) domains to the system domain. If a configuration uses a variety of external commodity code domains with commodity code maps between them, indirect mappings are possible, based on the shortest mapping path between domains. To avoid ambiguous mapping results, for example, when two mapping paths are equally short, it is recommended that you do not use indirect mappings. Instead, set up direct mappings between any external domain and your system domain. When you search for commodity code map entries, Ariba Buyer Administrator displays only direct mappings between two domains. For more information on commodity code maps, see the Ariba Buyer Data Load Guide.

You must take into account the From and To directions when searching for a mapping between two domains. For example, if mappings were made from the UNSPSC domain to other domains, you must select UNSPSC from the Domain From pull-down menu to view mappings for this domain. As another example, if mappings were made from the NAICS domain to the UNSPSC domain, you must select NAICS from the Domain From pull-down menu and UNSPSC from the Domain To pull-down menu to view mappings between these domains. Always search in both directions to ensure that any mappings from one domain to another are displayed. This directionality only affects the display of commodity code maps in Ariba Buyer Administrator. For all other purposes, mappings are bidirectional.

Access to create and edit commodity code maps depends on the permissions assigned to you and whether you are in view or edit mode. In the default configuration, the permissions required to view, create, edit, delete, and export commodity code maps are defined in the workspace configuration files. Permissions can be customized. For more information, see the Ariba Buyer Administrator Customization Guide.

Screen details

To display the Commodity Code Maps screen, click Commodity Code Maps under Commodity Code Manager in the Navigation Panel.

Display commodity code maps between domains. Initially, no commodity code maps are listed.

  • To display all commodity code maps between all commodity code domains in the database, click List All. Ariba Buyer Administrator displays only direct mappings between two domains. Indirect mappings between domains are not displayed.
  • To display commodity code maps between two specific domains, select the domains from the Domain From and Domain To pull-down menus, and then click Search. You must take into account the from and to directions when searching for a map. Always search in both directions to ensure specific maps are displayed.
  • To search for mappings from a specific commodity code to commodity codes in any other domain, first remove the Domain To and Value To search filters. Then select a domain from the Domain From pull-down menu, enter all or part of a commodity code ID in the Value From field, and then click Search or press the Enter key. Search fields are case-insensitive.
  • To specify in a search whether a commodity code and all branches below it are enabled (Yes), disabled (No), or either enabled or disabled (Either) in the commodity code hierarchy, click the appropriate radio button.
  • To add or remove search filters, click Add/Remove Search Filters. Then select or deselect the check boxes for the search filters.
  • If available, click the Table Options icon, located in the row above the column headers, to display commands that control the display of data in the table. For example, you can hide or show columns of data; group data; or export data to Excel.
  • To sort search results, click a column header. Click the header again to change the sort order, as indicated by the arrow.

Take other actions:

  • To create a new commodity code map in the database, click Create New.
  • To edit a commodity code map in the database, click its check box and then click Edit. When you edit a commodity code map, you can do the following:
    • Modify the from and to commodity code domains.
    • Specify different from and to commodity code IDs, or select different from and to commodity code names.
  • To delete one or more commodity code maps in the database, click their check boxes and then click Delete. You are asked to confirm your deletions.
  • To export commodity codes to .csv files, click Export. Commodity codes are exported using predefined integration events which do not depend on your login partition or the search filters you specified.
